The one thing that can’t be taught to a photographer is the ability to see. See beyond the frame and to the final image. Its not just understanding light or the technical aspects or even being creative; to set yourself apart, you must have vision.
I got to spend a bit of time these past few weeks with a photographer that i admire, Mr Alex Koloskov (www.koloskov.com). His popular blog is just a peak into his character. He’s not afraid to share his knowledge with those who want to learn. His prides himself on being passionate about the technical aspects of photography and works with subjects that he has a great level of control over. All being said, his final images are outstanding. With all of his technical prowess, he sees beyond the frame and creates a visually pleasing image of even the most simple of subjects.
This past weekend, I had the distinct please of assisting Alex during his Mastering Splash Masterclass in Atlanta. The small intimate setting was perfect for the type of material he was teaching. The importance of having the technical knowledge to set up the shot, but still having the vision to know where it was going to take him. One participant was astounded at the level of intricacy that Alex puts into lighting his subject. Lighting from a single speedlight up to four Paul C Buff Einstein 640’s gave us all options to work with. A long day and a wet pair of sneakers later, I’m happy I was a part of something as unique as this class.
To take the knowledge that has been shared and apply it to something that is satisfying to me is the next challenge. To execute my vision and not be limited by my own preconceived skills. Surrounding myself with those i admire and making their skills part of my own, executing on my vision is the only direction to go on from here.
